SINGAPORE, Jan 28 (Reuters) – Vietnam expects to turn into a coal importer within three years, spurred by an industrial boom and rising power consumption, a senior executive with the country’s coal export monopoly said on Thursday.
“We plan to start importing thermal coal from 2013,” said Trung Dinh Quang, general manager for imports and exports at Vinacomin at a coal conference in Singapore.
“We think 3-5 million tonnes per year (tpy) is a feasible figure, although we have a target of 5-7 million tonnes, he said adding that key suppliers would be Indonesia and Australia.
Vietnam had to turn to coal imports because of the booming cement industry and increased power projects in the country, he said.
“We see growth of 12-15 percent per annum in domestic power consumption,” he said. (Reporting by Jennifer Tan; Writing by Ramthan Hussain; Editing by Clarence Fernandez)
